Dr. Seuss!

Image
Since Dr. Seuss day is next week, we are doing a Dr. Seuss theme in my DLC/SDC classes.  We're going to read "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" (spatial concepts) and then play the game Whirly Fun (turn taking, go, stop, help, spatial concepts, put-it-away, etc.) I found this game at Wal-Mart on clearance for $2.50.  It's such a fun game!  You can put items in different rooms and try and clean up it mess before mom gets home... and you get to set off Thing 1 and Thing 2 periodically to knock more things down.  What kid doesn't love a spinning top, right? Just wanted to throw the idea out there. Hailey

In Search Of...

Hey fabulous SLPs! I just got out of a meeting in which the parent said the child has errors in Arabic that we have not noticed in English, either due to the errors parent reported being sounds not present in English or simply because he speaks much more at a conversational level in Arabic and is at a single word and phrase level in English. He is an extremely limited English speaker, and Arabic is by far his dominant language. I told his mother that we weren't hearing any developmentally inappropriate sound errors when he speaks in English at school at this time and that I would gather data to get more information about this particular case. Does anyone happen to have an Arabic word list (much like the parent checklist that we send home for articulation data in English) that touches on the different phonemes present in Arabic, so I can compare it to his English sound production? If so, PLEASE let me know ASAP! :) Side note: I do already have the Bilinguistics: Difference o...

Stay Interviews!

Stay Interviews rolled out today at my campus!  I was so glad I went because I really felt like I was heard.  They will ask you about 6 questions and people can come and go as they need to.  Questions were things like: how long have you been in RISD, how long have you been at your current campus, if you had a magic wand, what one thing would you change, what makes you stay in RISD, if you were to look at other districts, what would you look for, etc. I strongly encourage all SLPs to go!  It was a really powerful experience for me. Consents outside of RTI

I am allowed to get consent for an initial evaluation (for a student that currently attends my school) outside of an RTI meeting?  This is the situation: My counselor let me know that at the end of an RTI meeting about dyslexia concerns for a 1st grader, the parent brought up concerns about speech (dropping initial syllables, using incorrect verb tense or switching tense, dropping the -ing of words).  As the concern was originally dyslexia, another SPED evaluator was not present, and though they texted me I did not receive it in time to attend the meeting as the parent had to leave.  They "referred" to special education at the end of the meeting, without an evaluator, and gave me the folder after.  Am I supposed set up a time for a meeting to go over consents, or do I need to schedule another RTI meeting with the counselor? Just trying to make sure I do this the right way so that we don't set up a improper referral pattern.  Thanks!

Hi All! I presented last night at the department chair meeting about students with resource minutes who are SI only. I wanted to share this information with all of you as well! Please take the time to review these 5 slides so that you are aware of what was shared with your sped teams. Let me know if you have questions! -Natalie https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1UALRy45yHweOPeXZObe16j3PH-DO-x0ghanfIcMsUuE/edit?usp=sharing

Glassman

Hi wonderful SLPs! I have a 4th grade friend in my Structured Development Class who would benefit from some lessons about Glassman and "Size of the Problem."  I ordered some Size of the Problem materials from TPT, but, I don't have access to Superflex materials at my campus and I think he would really relate to the Superhero/Villian aspect.  Does anyone have anything great they could send my way about Glassman? Online resources, lessons, etc.  Or could I possibly borrow someone's Superflex or Glassman book? Thanks! Hailey

Hi Secondary SLPs, My intern is interested in observing/collaborating on therapy with a secondary SLP. I apologize for the late notice, but is anyone willing to let my intern come by Tues or Wed morning? I will be attending the Social Thinking Conference, so she will not be able to get many hours this week. Thanks in advance for your help! Jasmine
