ID/SI Eligibility Question

Hey everyone - Happy Winter Break! I'm sure I'm not the only SLP writing reports over the break...  So...  I have two 4th grade twins who are qualifying as Intellectual Disability (for the first time).  Both of their scores on the CELF-5 are significantly out of line with their VCI.  CELF-5 scores fall in the 50s-60s and their VCIs are 84 and 89.  VCI is a relative strength compared to their other cognitive processes.  If I take my scores into account compared to their other cognitive areas, language would be lower than all other cognitive processes.   I looked at the subtests they use for VCI and Similarities and Vocabulary - both are skills we've been working significantly on this year.  They also have significant difficulty sequencing steps in a process or story, speaking in complete sentences, and getting their messages across so they are easily understood.  Looking at their adaptive scales, one had communication rated signif...

Junior High Push-In with Language Live

Are any secondary SLP's providing push-in services during mod-rec ELA that's using Language Live? I'm working with one of my teachers to figure out how this might look. She's very anxious that I'll be deviating from the script of the curriculum and getting her in trouble for not implementing the curriculum as it is. I'm trying to be mindful of following the curriculum while providing intervention that is skilled and specially designed. Would love help brainstorming even if this isn't something you're doing right now! - Sara Wilkerson

Focus Groups/RISE clarification

Image
We received some feedback during the survey that brought over an oversight to our attention. It did appear in the RISE document that participating in a Focus Group was mandatory. It is absolutely NOT mandatory. We apologize for any miscommunication and have made the appropriate edits to the RISE rating rubric. Here is a picture of the new rubric: -SLP Leads

SLP FIE Tracking Form

Image
Hi everyone, Our table discussed my FIE tracking form at our SLP/Eval Staff Meeting on Friday and Mandy asked me to share it on the blog.  This is the form I use to track my FIEs from start to finish.  I print it double sided and put one in each evaluation folder.  Evaluation Folder : I use neon colored file folders with a strip of lamination/tape across the tab at the top.  On the tab I write the student's name and FIE due date in wet erase marker.  As I gather data on each student - it goes in the folder and I notate the dates on the form.  It's basically my thought processes on paper. The form can be found within this google drive folder .  It is titled SLP FIE Referral Form .  It must be opened in Microsoft Word - don't open it in google or it won't format correctly... you'll need to download it.  Please feel free to edit it to meet your needs.  Best, Hailey

CEU's

If you need CEU hours, an option for getting credit is SpeechPathology.com.  It costs $99 a year but it has a huge offering of live seminars or recorded ones.  I needed hours before the end of December so I decided to try this company.  Many of the sessions are an hour which fit my schedule perfectly.  There are topics in every area for all age groups.  The sessions I've watched have been excellent.  I highly recommend this site for CEU's.  It's been well worth the money I spent to join. www.SpeechPathology.com

LCRM - Pg 85

Hi everyone! I went to make copies of my LCRM Middle School Level today and discovered I am missing page 85 (the first page of the Student Booklet).  Can anyone scan that page and send it to me?  hailey.gaida@risd.org Thank you! Hailey

Junior High /r/ homework

I have a student who's /r/ is just STUCK. He's got it in some positions and not in others, i feel like we're starting over each session with the sound and he's got much more important pragmatic goals to be targeting with our time... SO... Anyone have a tried and true homework /r/ packet? I'm working on making on with visuals of placement for bunched /r/ (his preferred method) with word lists and sentences. I'm hopeful that more daily practice, monitored by mom, will boost his intelligibility.

Snack Time Descriptions

Image
Hi all, I was able to spend some time with Katie Alexander in her PPCD class at Northrich Elementary yesterday and loved her snack time idea. I asked her if she would mind sharing it with the district SLPs and she graciously agreed. After the requesting stage of snack time, Katie used this description board to ask questions about what they were eating. Students were able to describe their snack choice by color, shape, etc. and talk about if their snack choice was the same or different than their friend's snack choice. Katie told me she shared this on the district Boardmaker share drive. I am also going to upload it to the google drive under therapy so you can use it during your snack time. Happy snacking!! -Nichole

Indicator 7 Training - Tomorrow 12/5/17

In case you missed it in the MeSSSage of the Week - there is an Indicator 7 training scheduled for Tuesday, December 5th. If you work with 3-6 year olds, please plan on attending! Sign up through TNL! - Mandy I have received several emails asking if this training is required. I checked with Jackie Kinsey and here is her response: It is my understanding that these are required trainings, but I have copied Kim in case I am wrong about this. If I hear differently from Kim, I will let you know. -Nichole

Articulation Question

Happy Friday! Has anyone ever worked with a student with autism who also has an articulation impairment and thought it might be related more to sensory aversions/differences than misarticulations? I would love to run a case by you if you have - or if you're just an articulation expert! Thanks! Alex Wilks x3-2370

ULS Supplements

Hi all! Happy December!  Here are some of the supplemental materials for CORE and Active Learners.  I am still adding some but I wanted to get the Active learning supplement out to you.  Please add ideas to the Overall Supplement page.  This is the same lesson that happens every December so we can continue to add to it to share ideas and next year will be a breeze! ;)  Look in the Folder for COREed books and other ideas.  Add your favorite activities!  Check back throughout the month because when we or a teacher/SLP modifies some of the lessons – we add them to the folder.  (Check out the rain stick activity from last month!)
