I'm using a fun and easy activity today with younger elementary language kids that I got from TpT. It's called "Eggcellent Listening" by The Social Speechie. No prep!!! - Tanya Johnson, WRE

Silly Secondary Activity

Just wanted to share a silly activity that's worked out for me at junior high (and the reading level can be be modified for older elementary and high school). News ELA article: "Opinion: Looking into UFOs is no laughing matter" We pulled out facts, opinions, determined the author's viewpoint, chose a side, defended our side, answered detail questions and pulled out some vocabulary for context clues and all that good stuff. Then (at the request of one of my students!) we did some behavior mapping for "meeting aliens". The kids seemed to really enjoy doing behavior mapping on something that was so far removed from their own situations/experiences. We got to pull in things we'd seen on TV shows and movies to determine what was an 'unexpected' behavior that had poor results and what would be more 'expected'. I was also surprised at how my kids were really considering what the alien might think/feel based on the alien's experiences. ...

Using our Budget for Amazon

I would like to be able to use my budget to purchase materials and sensory items on Amazon. Has anyone done this successfully? Is Amazon on the vendor list?

Everyday Speech

Not sure if anyone uses Everyday Speech, but BHS allowed us to buy it and it's a great resource for social skills videos and accompanying worksheets.  Can be used for elementary through high school. Some are more appropriate for younger and some for older, just have to sift through them.  It's a subscription for $100/year and they come out with new videos and worksheets every month, and you can see all videos posted throughout the years.  I believe here are some freebies you can check out to see if you like it.  You can watch the videos on any device.  www.everydayspeech.com.

Quick Survey: Evaluation and Treatment of Bilingual Students

Welcome back from Spring Break!  We didn't have a lot of responses to our survey, and we'd really love to hear about your experience with evaluating or treating students in languages other than English/Spanish in your schools. Please complete this three question survey so we can collect information and compile resources. Open survey here! Thanks, Bilingual Evaluation and Service Delivery Focus Group

I love Julia Cook's books and this is a new one about autism.

Experience with Yoruba?

I have a re-evaluation for a student initially identified with SLD and SI outside of RISD. We accepted the FIE when he showed up, but when he was testing out of state (only a few months after entering the USA) the evaluator in no way recognized or considered that his first language is Yoruba. I'm doing lots of research and finding that many of his "errors" are just "differences". Anyone else work with a bilingual student who speaks Yoruba? I've found some good resources on language influences and differences, but would love more if anyone has anything to share. Thanks!
