Silly Secondary Activity
Just wanted to share a silly activity that's worked out for me at junior high (and the reading level can be be modified for older elementary and high school).
News ELA article: "Opinion: Looking into UFOs is no laughing matter"
We pulled out facts, opinions, determined the author's viewpoint, chose a side, defended our side, answered detail questions and pulled out some vocabulary for context clues and all that good stuff.
Then (at the request of one of my students!) we did some behavior mapping for "meeting aliens". The kids seemed to really enjoy doing behavior mapping on something that was so far removed from their own situations/experiences. We got to pull in things we'd seen on TV shows and movies to determine what was an 'unexpected' behavior that had poor results and what would be more 'expected'. I was also surprised at how my kids were really considering what the alien might think/feel based on the alien's experiences.
It was really silly, but they had a great time and now we all have a better idea of how to interact with extraterrestrials. :)
