Happy Better Hearing and Speech Month!! Thanks to our wonderful group of SLPs for all that you do to support students with speech impairments across RISD! Please consider taking this opportunity in May to educate others about our profession and the early warning signs of a speech impairment! ASHA provides great resources to assist SLPs in this effort! Please click here to access these resources: https://www.asha.org/bhsm/ Throughout the month of May, please share all of the wonderful things you are doing on your campus to support Better Hearing and Speech Month on the blog and on Twitter! #BHSM

Berkner HS supports Autism Awareness!!  We made some T-shirts to sell as a fundraiser for our DLC students and used the Cafeteria to post fun facts about Autism on puzzle pieces that students taped onto the wall.  #AutismAwareness  #SLPs

I added an activity for making pizza on Google Drive!  It's in the therapy by theme folder and also in the Aug Com May ULS folder.  I'm using it in my DLC classes with the Let's Grow a Pizza Garden story. Five more weeks, y'all! -Kristin

Revision ARDs for SSI Year Fifth and Eighth Grade Students

Hi all, I just heard this in a department chair meeting and wanted to make sure you were informed. The department chairs were asked to schedule revision ARDs for the students who did not pass the first administration of STAAR to discuss participation in the second and third round of STAAR prior to the second administration of STAAR. This ARD will lay the groundwork for decision making based on if students pass the second and third round of STAAR. You can discuss participation in the following STAAR rounds and projected decisions based on if students will or will not pass so you can call parents to inform them of next steps without having to have an ARD after the second or third round of STAAR. Every student who does not pass the first round of STAAR will need an accelerated instruction plan whether or not they will be promoted to the next grade level. This includes students who are receiving only speech therapy services who do not pass STAAR. Information about this will als...

Parent Generalization

Hi SLP’s!  After our great round-table discussions a few weeks ago, one initiative we are moving forward with is a web-based location for parent recourses.  As we work toward building this, we need your help with recourses you use to help parents.  This can be anything from a worksheet, articulation video, handout you have made, language games you send home, summer activities, visuals, research articles, AAC, etc.  We will be putting a file in the SLP Google Drive entitled “Parent Generalization”.  Please put any of those recourses in that file next week.  We hope this helps parents and helps you not re-invent the wheel! Please email email Allison Domlovil or Sarah Little with any questions!

BHSM is coming...

Is anyone doing anything awesome on their campus for Better Hearing and Speech Month? Anyone do anything in the past that was successful--or not--that you'd be willing to share? I'd like to do something  to help my campus better understand why I'm there and what I (can) do! I'm thinking... Speech bubbles posted around campus with QR codes that lead to quizlets, factoids, videos, etc. related to speech/language A raffle for teachers with multiple opportunities to earn entries by answering questions related to speech/language Maybe asking if any staff members are comfortable sharing their speech therapy stories from when they were in speech as kids. Making a bulletin board of famous people or historical figures who had speech therapy Anyone else?

Social Thinking Concepts

Does anyone have any handouts in Spanish related to Social Thinking concepts that I could share with a parent? - Tanya Johnson, WRE

Professional Development Hours - True North Logic

Image
Hi Everyone, Please check your True North Logic transcripts to ensure you have completed your 18 hours for the current school year by April 20th. If you have attended professional developments during non-duty time to earn CEUs and have received a certificate of completion, it is possible to submit these to True North Logic for credit. Please also email a copy of certificates you have uploaded to your SLP Lead so they aware that your professional development requirements have been fulfilled. Thanks! Mandy

Auditory Processing Disorder

We have seen an increase in Auditory Processing Disorder evaluations. These are tricky evaluations and research on the test we have ( The Test of Auditory Processing ) states is not a pure auditory processing test. It also tests Short Term Memory, Long Term Retrieval, and Crystalized Intelligence. Due to this, the test is more closely considered a cognitive test than a pure test of auditory processing. We have been working on an evaluation plan for these students so please contact your lead/supervisor when you are in the process of an APD evaluation so we can assist you. -Nichole
