Auditory Processing Disorder
We have seen an increase in Auditory Processing Disorder evaluations. These are tricky evaluations and research on the test we have (The Test of Auditory Processing) states is not a pure auditory processing test. It also tests Short Term Memory, Long Term Retrieval, and Crystalized Intelligence. Due to this, the test is more closely considered a cognitive test than a pure test of auditory processing.
We have been working on an evaluation plan for these students so please contact your lead/supervisor when you are in the process of an APD evaluation so we can assist you.

I'm so glad y'all are looking into it. Has any new information come out about the disability coding for CAPD if it is identified? I have a student who was identified with it last year, and because we didn't have an MD to sign an OHI form, we had to tie his weaknesses caused by CAPD into his speech impairment coding.

2. Specific Learning Disorder
3. Other Health Impairment
In order to have OHI they have to have a doctor sign off on it. This would be very rare as doctors are not normally the ones who diagnose CAPD (AuDs are).
It is looking more like it would be under SI because CAPD is a "pre-Wernicke's area impairment" and Wernicke's area is where receptive language is. So if the breakdown is before that, then receptive language should be impacted.
It could also be under SLD if the testing shows that. So pretty much, at this time, they would need to qualify for one of those on their own and then we would look into CAPD as an explanation of why they would qualify for one of those. It is unlikely they would have CAPD without qualifying for something else first.
We are still in the beginning stages so please don't take these remarks as fact. This is just where we are in the research right now. It may change as we continue through this process.
This is utterly fascinating. I definitely agree that they would need to show something like SLD/SI in conjunction with CAPD... because I believe those weaknesses should show up on our testing.
