October LID/Active Learner and CORE Supplements

Image
Hi all – Here is your October LID/Active Learner Supplement.  All levels are doing movement.  The book this month for all levels is appropriate for the LID/Active Learning Curriculum. Within the month “Go” is a common theme.  Go to use for CORE and Sensory Lessons. For the LID Supplement folder – There is one document with the suggested words for the month (that you are used to) and a sample lesson for one of the words.  Also in the folder is an elementary and a secondary document with suggestions for activities that are in the ULS curriculum.  I also included the books for elementary and high school with Go in them – which is one of the suggested words for this month - as well as the CORE word suggestion for the month.  If you are just doing CORE – check out the LID supplement as well to see ideas for Science that would be great for sensory lesson and CORE lessons! ;) I added a place at the bottom for addition ideas – you guys have gre...

Online Resource for Selecting Picture Books by Target Area

Check out this AMAZING resource that was shared in an SLP online group I follow: http://booksharetime.com/  The website is managed by an SLP in Australia, and has searchable lists of picture books organized by target speech/language area. You can search by keyword, age (birth-8 years), target concept, narrative structure, and so much more. Each book has a brief synopsis. There is also a blog and newsletter you can sign up for to get information on new picture books and ideas. I'm so excited about finding this and wanted to share - it's a gold mine! -Erin

Updated REED Guidelines

The following was e-mailed out to all campus support staff: In an effort to make our REED process more efficient and clear, we will be implementing new REED/Re-evaluation guidelines. If you are currently working within the REED/Evaluation application for an evaluation, please complete the evaluation with guidance provided last year for that case. You should proceed with the steps outlined in the new REED/Re-evaluation guidelines on all new re-evaluations. We will be disabling the REED/Evaluation application in the future. Below you will find a link to the REED/Re-evaluation guidelines, a 22 minute training video, REED/Re-evaluation guiding document and a question submission form. Please review all in their entirety. Any questions that are submitted will be addressed with the entire team and a FAQ will be developed for future reference. Image
Hi Everyone! I loaned my book for the SKILL narrative instruction program a few times last year, and the book was returned to me, but I just noticed the attached CD is missing! =( If you had the book last year, please check your materials for the CD - and let me know where to come and get it! Many thanks for your help! -Mandy

Social Narrative

One of my resource teachers is in search of a social narrative about appropriate boundaries in friendships at school for an upper elementary student who is starting to develop feelings for boys in her class. I'm thinking maybe one of our fabulous junior high SLPs may have something that could work. Does anyone have anything that she could use and/or tweek to meet her needs?  Thanks in advance!  -Kristina Barth

Dis- or Dys-?

When I was in undergrad my professor was adamant that stuttering events were referred to as dysfluencies. More and more lately, in blogs, forums and even in our own shell report, I've seen "disfluency" used. Here's a link to a JSLHR letter to the editor that espouses the same viewpoint as my former professor. For those who have to reset their ASHA password every time they log in because they keep forgetting it (like me!) here's an excerpt:  "The prefix dis- is used to form words that define the opposite of something or lack of something. In this sense, the word disfluency means a lack of fluency in speech or simply speech that is not fluent. We all exhibit disfluent speech at various times. I also would imagine that a good proportion of a stutterer's speech would contain disfluencies. On the other hand, the prefix dys- means bad, ill, difficult, abnormal, and so forth. Therefore, the word dysfluency would refer to speech that is abnormal. Most like...

Bilingual SI Evaluation Requests

We have outlined the process for requesting a bilingual evaluation through Maria and Stephanie. As a reminder, please refer to the training from 8/11/17 and the Interactive Bilingual Decision Tree to help guide your decisions as to whether a bilingual evaluation may be needed. These can be found in the Bilingual Evaluations folder on SLP Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7zW3axuRNd5cmgtZHBHbEdRRWM    Once you have determined that a bilingual SI evaluation may be necessary, you will request the evaluation through the following process: Submit the Request for Diagnostic Services to Christina Regan as usual. Include all necessary paperwork, and mark “Bilingual Evaluation” if it is appropriate.  This should be done at the time you obtain consent , even if you are not yet certain if the bilingual SI evaluator will need to come out. Complete your SI evaluation and gather all needed data, including CELF scores where appropriate. If your student requires...

CORE Badge Cards

Hey there! I couldn't find a way to have the badge symbols print out the way I needed them to, so I quickly re-created them in Boardmaker Online this morning.  I've uploaded a PDF to our Aug Comm section of the SLP drive if anyone else also needs them. I also shared them on the SLP and SPED groups in Boardmaker Online. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0YBwCvaFDFkYmtDaVVVX1pDWlU Happy Thursday! Hailey

CORE in the Secondary Classroom

This is a great article from a high school SPED teacher and how she incorporates CORE vocabulary into her classroom.  She saw the same communication challenges you all do with kids with different experiences with language and systems and tried to find a unifying system she could use with her whole class!  Hello CORE!!  She recognized that she was looking at functional skills as well as communication and found cooking a great place to start!  Check it out! http://praacticalaac.org/praactical/aac-in-the-high-school-classroom-where-core-vocabulary-meets-life-skills/ (Good article for all levels - but love that it is from the secondary world!) Would love to hear how your secondary campus uses CORE or plans to use it this year!
